For his new body of work for Letter to an ailing father, Shezad Dawood looks at the role of the sun (and its inverse the moon) as both caregiver and destroyer. Source of solar energy and a dying star that symbolises entropy and environmental collapse. On the way he takes in local folklore such as the myth of the sunless king, and the ancient temple to Apollo Phanaios - literally a site of divine appearance or epiphany. He also spent time listening to the changing birdsongs and patterns of donkey’s hooves after last year’s wildfires, which reminded him of particular instrumentation such as the ney and improv percussion. This led to an exchange with his friend and collaborator, pioneering musician and composer: Adam Rudolph, who provides the accompanying score: Invisible Threads (performed alongside Ahmet Haci Tekbilek, Jesper Egelund Pedersen, Marco Cappelli, Okay Temiz, Özlem Kaya, Sıla Gerbag, Sumru Ağıryürüyen, Sumru Ağıryürüyen, Özlem Kaya, Jesper Egelund Pedersen, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Su Lara Aslan, Ceyhan Akçar) to the suite of paintings and textile assemblages that herald the sun (and moon) in their changing phases on the island of Chios, and out over the sea beyond.
